People to People was established in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower in the hopes of establishing peace among others through understanding. The purpose of People to People was to eliminate misperceptions and misunderstandings among nations by taking young Americans to other nations and letting them visit their cities, homes, and schools. Thus, letting people understand that though others may act and look differently, in the end, everyone has similar issues, values, and goals. Eisenhower believed that it would be more effective for the citizens who strive for peace to take the power into their own hands and become citizen ambassadors.

People to People was launched in Kansas City, Missouri, and many individuals got to have a firsthand experience with different cultures. Although People to People was first geared towards working citizens, Eisenhower soon realized the potential and power of young Americans as Student Ambassadors. In 1963, Keith Tatham organized the first ever Student Ambassador Delegation. From that point forward, thousands of young Americans have crossed international borders helping to realize Eisenhower’s dream of world peace. Student Ambassadors continue to travel the world, representing their town, school, and People to People. But most of all, Student Ambassadors represent the best of America, they represent America’s courage, love of peace, and hopes for a bright future.
